Newark, N.J. – University Hospital, one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, is undertaking a project to upgrade many of its patient rooms and enhance quality and comfort for both patients and their families. The hospital recently purchased new patient chairs, overbed tables, bedside cabinets and guest chairs for 135 patient rooms in its cardiac, neuroscience and trauma/surgery units. Part of the Nurture® by Steelcase range, the furniture was purchased as part of an incremental upgrade of the hospital’s patient rooms which also included the recent addition of new patient beds in 293 rooms.
Working with DS&D, a leading building interior solutions company, the hospital will begin replacing patient furniture during the week of March 17. Installation of the furniture is being carried out incrementally. The new Nurture® by Steelcase furniture is designed to facilitate connections between patients, families, and clinicians and create a welcoming, comfortable environment.
“We recognize every hospital stay is, on some levels, stressful for both patients and their loved ones,” said Nancy Hamstra, Chief Operating Officer of University Hospital. “We are committed to delivering the best clinical outcome for every one of our patients and providing a welcoming, comfortable environment in which patients and their families interact with caregivers is a critical component of our efforts to do just that.”
“Furniture plays a critical role in today’s healthcare environment,” said Kevin Klier, Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager of Furniture at DS&D. “The right furniture has the ability to increase functionality, as well as create an inviting and comfortable space for patients and families to connect. Ultimately, this all contributes to providing the highest possible quality of patient care.”
