Adult Braces: What Are Your Options?

Thinking about braces?  Adults now make up roughly half of all braces patients.  Thanks to new technology, there are many more options to consider.  Some of your choices include braces that can be completed within 6 months, clear braces that go largely unnoticed, removable and invisible aligners that straighten teeth and the list goes on.  ‘Metal mouth’ is really a term of the past since none of these options use the old large metal brackets.

Why are so many adults considering braces now?  Many have had braces as children and their teeth have moved significantly as time passed.  Most people want a smile they can be proud of, and with so many quick and affordable options available now, people realize how easy it can be.  People see that it can make a huge difference in both their personal and professional lives.  After treatment, patients notice how much more they smile, in pictures and in general.   Patients also notice how much more confident they are with their new smile.

Invisalign is a strong option for those that need a teeth straightening method that is removable for meetings or other important events.  With this option, the patient is given a set of removable clear aligners that are replaced at designated intervals, usually every 2 weeks, slowly bringing the teeth into alignment.  This option relies largely on the patients’ compliance as they must wear the aligners for 20-22 out of 24 hours of the day, taking them out only when eating.

6 Month Smiles is a great alternative.  With this option, the patient wears clear brackets that are bonded to the teeth for a shorter amount of time, generally 6 months.  Patients come in for adjustments every month but depending on the case they could be finished with the treatment by their next dental visit.  With this option the dentist has more control over the teeth and their final placement through the use of wires and brackets.  This option is better for more complicated cases since the Dentist has more control over the movement of the teeth.  In this option they also remain largely invisible since the brackets and wires are clear.
