Now that the Township Committee has , an upcoming event at may be that much more topical for many a Maplewoodian.
Durand-Hedden is hosting Chick Talk (The Backyard Variety) on Sunday, October 23 at 2 p.m. The event is free.
An event release from Durand-Hedden promises the "true facts - both positive and negative - on keeping backyard chickens." Montclair chicken-owner Grace Chow Grund will introduce two “girls” from her flock and share information on the basics of poultry care, the cost, the equipment and space required, sources and what to do if the effort doesn’t work.
Susan Newberry of Durand-Hedden tells us that there is a long history of raising chickens in Maplewood extending from our agrarian past up through the mid-20th century until the practice declined on its own in the 1950’s.
Also on Sunday, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. visitors will also be able to view the exhibit, The Maplewood Woman’s Club: A Century of Service to Country and Community and stroll the grounds of Grasmere Park. The Country Store will be open with its unique selection of souvenirs and books. For more information, call 973-763-7712. The Durand-Hedden House is located at 523 Ridgewood Road in Maplewood.
