Golf Tournament Will Benefit South Orange Rescue Squad

A charity golf tournament benefitting the all-volunteer South Orange Rescue Squad (SORS) will tee-off on Monday, October 15 at Maplewood Country Club.  Hosted by the South Orange Citizens Public Safety Committee and SORS, the tournament welcomes players of all levels to take to the links and raise much-needed money for the rescue squad.  After the tournament, players will head over to Cryan’s Beef & Ale House to celebrate the SORS 60thAnniversary with a prime rib dinner, awards program, and raffle.

The residents of SOMA have spoken, and the members of the Board of Education have listened. In response to input from community members inlast year’s survey asking for greater communication with the school district, the board is initiating a pilot program of monthly BOE office hours starting Thursday, Oct. 18, from 7:30-9:00 p.m., at the South Orange Public Library.

Do you believe that gratitude can be contagious? Two Maplewood residents, Lucila McElroy and Candice Davenport, are convinced that it can be. They are launching the first Gratitude Graffiti Project, an interactive, public effort to encourage residents to express their gratitude each and every day.

The Maplewood Department of Public Works will begin leaf pick throughout the township starting the week of October 22. The schedule is below; to locate your section of town, check the Map on the DPW website.

Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week will be marked for the first time in New Jersey this year, thanks to the efforts of Alexis Ritter Gubbay and Cheri Ambrose. Governor Chris Christie has proclaimed October 21 through October 27, 2012 as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week."Finally, some blue coming through," says Gubbay, who, with Ambrose, established The Blue Wave.  Gubbay, who has lived in both South Orange and Maplewood, hopes to raise awareness of breast cancer in men through the organizations.  Gubbay's husband, Judah, died of the disease in 2007.
