Meet the Boutique Seekers at the Turnover Sale

Meg and Dave Gilbert are familiar faces to any local Turnover shoppers. They paused to answer a few questions, as they unpacked donated goods -- and some are very, very good -- to display in the "boutique" housewares area.

How long have volunteered at the Turnover Sale?

Meg: We began helping out at the sale about 17 years ago.

What keeps you coming back?

Dave: It's a spirit of discovery. There's something special in every box. We enjoy figuring out the history of the items.

What are some memorable finds?

Dave: Every year, there's at least one item we can't identify, no matter what. Our customers help us by teaching us what unfamiliar items are or what they're for, but there's always something that remains a mystery.

Meg:  There's also a theme each year, though we don't know what is it yet. It emerges from the donations.

You have good stories to tell!

Meg: We research items that interest us and I've learned more than I ever thought possible about china patterns, the marks on the back of porcelain pieces. We volunteer in the summer, but we learn all year long.

Dave: Everything is this room was important to someone once, and we respect that. Our job is to place it and price it right, so someone else can enjoy it.

What's your advice for the first-time Turnover shopper?

Meg: Be patient!  And come often.  Not only do we get new donations, but it can be overwhelming if you try to work through a list on one visit.

Dave: Enjoy the hunt. We have interesting items, something for everyone.
