Two members of the Maplewood Middle School community have a new "favorite thing" thanks to Oprah Winfrey.
Yes, they each won a brand new car!
Toi Jackson, a sixth grade history teacher, and Karla Ridley, the Assistant Principal of Maplewood Middle School, were in the audience for Oprah’s final “favorite thing” show where the the generous hostess gives away one of her favorite things to the members of the audience. On that day, her favorite thing was a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.
Accompanied by her husband Isaiah, Jackson saw her brand new silver Beetle for the first time on Thursday at Douglas Volkswagen in Summit. She was overjoyed with the gift.
“Wow. I’m very excited and very appreciative to have had this opportunity to go to the Oprah Show,” said Jackson.
According to Chris Ng, a sale associate at the Summit dealership, each audience member who won the car that day was given the option of a pickup location. Jackson chose the Summit dealership.
"This [Beetle] is specific for her," Ng said about the car which was polished up and put on the showroom floor before the Jacksons arrived. After giving the Oprah fan a detailed breakdown of the car's offerings, Jackson was able to drive the car right off the showroom floor.
The final “Favorite Things” show was filled with “Ultimate Viewers” and “Heroes” in the audience. Jackson was chosen after creating a foundation that helps battered woman and combats domestic abuse. Jackson started the foundation, called Just Breathe, in honor of her friend and co-worker Ridley. Ridley was also in the audience that day and received her car Thursday afternoon.
“When you have butterflies in your stomach and you can’t sleep at night, that’s a prime example of how excited we are about getting this car,” exclaimed Ridley.
