"Suspicious" Fire Damages Tuscan School Shed

Maplewood Fire Department said vandalism is suspected.

A fire damaged a vinyl utility shed on the grounds of Tuscan Elementary School late Tuesday night, according to Chief Michael Dingelstedt.

"It appears to be vandalism," said Dingelstedt. The Maplewood Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are conducting an investigation; the prosecutor's office is involved because the fire was on school property, Dingelstedt said.

A custodian discovered the shed was burned on Wednesday morning; the fire had burned itself out sometime overnight, said Dingelstedt.

The incident is not believed to be related to a fire in a house on Prospect Street early Wednesday morning. "There is nothing to indicate a connection," said Dingelstedt.
