County Clerk to Tally BOE Provisional Ballots

A winner of the third seat of South Orange and Maplewood Board of Education race may be determined by Tuesday night, officials say.

The Essex County Board of Elections will soon determine the winner of the third seat on the South Orange and Maplewood Board of Education.

With the County Clerk's Office closed Monday for Veterans Day, officials began counting provisional ballots on Tuesday, according to the office of the county clerk.

The provisional ballots will be tallied on Tuesday and a winner could be determined by Tuesday night Wednesday morning, officials from the Clerk's Office said.

Stephanie Lawson-Muhammad remains ahead of David Giles by just 24 votes with election day votes and mail-in ballots. County officials will determine which provisional ballots are eligible, and if more than 24 are eligible, it may be enough to swing the election.

Preliminary numbers posted by the Essex County Clerk's Office were clear that incumbent Board of Education President Beth Daugherty and newcomer Johanna Wright won two of the three available seats on the Board.

Daugherty had the most votes with 5,481 while Wright came in second with 4,790. Marian Cutler received 3,224 There were also 93 Write-in votes.
