Five Questions With Maplewood Township Committee Candidate Kurt Kiley

Kurt Kiley is seeking election to the Maplewood Township Council on Nov. 5.

What other Boards or Committees have you been a part of and how has your experience prepared you for the Maplewood Township Committee?

I believe in reaching out and accessing many different opinions and perspectives. During my campaign I consulted with existing and former members of Maplewood’s boards and committees, as well as concerned citizens. Every person contacted eagerly shared their knowledge and experience. I believe the best solutions arise from understanding the problem, involving the best people, and collaborating to build the best solution.

I have lived in Maplewood two-and-a-half years, after researching the roles and responsibilities of the various boards and committees; I believe I can make the greatest impact on the Township Committee.

Why do you want to be on the Township Committee?

Maplewood’s high taxes force residents to work harder than most to live in a desirable place. I believe we need to put Maplewood on a new path to become a leading 21st century community, becoming more than just a town with good schools, but also a vibrant community that engages its people and contributes to their well-being in every stage of their lives.

I believe we are beneficiaries of a great town that was perfectly planned long ago, and while moving forward we can embrace and enhance the character and charm that makes Maplewood a special place to live.

What is your occupation and what makes you qualified for this position?

I have a master’s degree in management; I started my management consultancy 25 years ago and have been working with innovative small- and medium-sized businesses to help improve their business processes and remain lean and competitive.

My business experience will help Maplewood achieve the economic development for which it has been striving. My experience with planning, problem solving and team building will ensure qualified decisions are made; that we plan for the complete picture; and we make the most of the opportunities presented to us.

What issues do you plan to tackle if elected?

Addressing crime, taxes and transparency are ongoing issues that I intend to involve myself in from the beginning.

I will ensure strategic redevelopment addresses township issues, improves the quality of life for everyone, and does not put an unfair tax burden on our existing citizens.

Economic development of Maplewood Village and Springfield Avenue will reap major rewards for the entire Maplewood community. I will focus on promoting our existing merchants, and bring them business development resources they need to ensure they thrive.

Long-term, I will work toward a vision of Maplewood as a destination for art and culture. Art and culture improves the quality of life for everyone, and can be an integral part of our economic development. Maplewood has a high concentration of citizens in the creative and cultural fields; I believe this is a natural talent of our town, and something we should promote.

Why should residents vote for you?

As a new resident, I bring new ideas and a fresh perspective to the Township Committee. I have lived in many different towns, and travel around the country and the world. I will bring the best ideas of what is working for other towns to Maplewood, and make it uniquely ours.

On November 5th, declare your independence from old ideas, and vote for an independent thinker who is looking forward toward the future.

Vote for Kurt Kiley.
