Sunday, December 2 - head to the Durand-Hedden House with your family 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. for a fun, old-fashioned prelude to the holidays. The Victorian parlor will be dressed up with garlands and vintage decorations setting the tone for a Christmas celebration of yesteryear. Young visitors can busy themselves creating a variety of embellished paper ornaments to take home and join in a Durand-Hedden scavenger hunt game with prizes.  Professional guitarist and teacher John Brophy will treat partygoers to holiday music while they enjoy a cup of mulled cider and cookies in front of the fire.  Lovers of local history and architecture can peruse the exhibit, After the Hickories: Roosevelt Park, to learn more about the Roosevelt Park section of Maplewood.

Out in the carriage house the Country Store will open up its coffers for a “super sale” of historic- themed treasures:  early American children’s games and toys, facsimile documents, quill pens and ink, historic cook books, cookie molds, tin lanterns, hand blown blue birds, reproductive decorative items and ceramics, and more. The hard- to-find original Doors of Maplewood poster and Smile, the history of Olympic Park, will also be available. No need to go to the mall!  Find inexpensive, unique gifts for family, friends, teachers while benefitting the Durand-Hedden House.

The Durand-Hedden House is dedicated to telling the story of the development of Maplewood and the surrounding area in new and engaging ways.  It is located in Grasmere Park at 523 Ridgewood Road in Maplewood.  For more information or to arrange group tours call 973-763-7712.
