Mandolin Orange joins us for the first time as part of the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum“Summer Concerts in the Garden Series” on Sundays in July at 4pm. The beautiful historic gardens will be the backdrop for a superb lineup of musicians and a great setting for visitors to settle on the lawn for a relaxing afternoon of music.
Mandolin Orange is a popular North Carolina band that has a great following and is heard at venues around the country and beyond. Since meeting at a local jam in Chapel Hill in 2009, Marlin and Franz have intertwined gospel, folk, and bluegrass and their current album “This Side Of Jordan” maintains their modest aesthetic with pure and calming sounds. Over the last few years, Mandolin Orange has shared bills with Rosanne Cash, Chatham County Line, the Steep Canyon Rangers and Abigail Washburn, and traveled to the UK to perform at festivals, including Ulster's 21st Annual Bluegrass Festival, Shakori Hills Grassroots, and Hopscotch Music Festival.
On July 13th Hub Hollow returns to the Macculloch Hall garden after three tremendously popular summer performances. Drawing on bluegrass, rock, & old time music, Hub Hollow has been described as “a new kind of old-time music.” Their beautifully blended vocals and intricate melodies reflect a lifetime of creating music together.United in their desire to create hard-hitting, interesting acoustic music, the members of Hub Hollow have been playing together, in different configurations, for over 20 years. Blending rock & bluegrass, old time & blues, members have enjoyed success on both coasts at many notable venues, including both Telluride and Grey Fox music festivals.
A great double bill of live music will be in store on July 20th when Collin J. Rocker and Gary Reed, crowd favorites in 2013, take the stage. Musician and songwriter Collin J. Rocker will start the show at 4pm with “Country Blues for the Here and Now”. With gritty tradition, Collin turns timeless themes of heartbreak, the road, and the past into songs suiting today’s common man. Collin has performed alongside national acts such as Jorma Kaukonen (Hot Tuna), Rory Block, and The New Riders of The Purple Sage on a number of legendary stages. Singer-songwriter & guitarist Gary Reed will continue the July 20th program with “21st Century Songs with Roots in the 1960’s & 70’s”. Mr. Reed has reemerged as an accomplished and contemporary voice — with lyrics that resonate from that earlier time. An outstanding guitar player and performer, he is a premier fingerstyle guitar player and guitar champion who writes and plays unique solo guitar arrangements ranging from Joplin to the Beatles, New Age to Yazoo and “Finger Popping” original tunes.
On July 27 Mipso travels to Morristown to perform their combination of Americana, indie and folk music to close out the series. The renegade traditionalists of Mipso — Jacob Sharp on mandolin, Joseph Terrell on guitar, and Wood Robinson on double bass — are doing their part to take three-part harmony and Appalachian influences into new territory. Formed in Chapel Hill in 2010, the three North Carolina songwriters of Mipso have wandered off the path blazed by Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson to find a new clearing for their southern string band sound. Now, after a whirlwind tour through Japan’s bustling bluegrass scene and a host of sold-out shows across North Carolina, Jacob, Joseph and Wood are making the happy adjustment from local favorites to global emissaries for their decidedly new string band sound.
The Summer Concerts in the Garden series takes place on Sundays in July at 4pm. Tickets for each concert will go on sale from 1pm on the day of the performance, no advance sales. Concert tickets are $15; $10 for members, seniors, students. Free for children under 12. On concert days the Museum building is open 1 - 4pm, concert tickets still available after 4pm. A special $5 Museum admission ticket can be purchased during the afternoon by concert ticket purchasers. The last guided tour is at 3pm, galleries remain open until 4pm. Concert goers should bring blankets or chairs, no seating is available. Only service animals permitted, no pets please. In the case of inclement weather the performance will be moved indoors (limited seating). The announcement will be made on Museum voicemail by 12 noon.
Macculloch Hall Historical Museum preserves the history of the Macculloch-Miller families, the Morris area community, and the legacy of its founder W. Parsons Todd through its historic site, collections, exhibits, and educational and cultural programs. The Museum is open for house and exhibit tours on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The last tour leaves at 3pm. Adults $8; Seniors & Students $6; Children 6 – 12 $4. Members and children under 5 are free. The gardens are open (free of charge) during Museum hours. The museum is closed for the Labor Day holiday on Sunday August 31st.
