Comic-Con International: San Diego wrapped up yesterday, Sunday - July 21st. This convention is no longer a "Trekkie Thing," as it was once dubbed. Comic-Con is one of the major advertising venues for movie, television, literature and merchandise. Hordes of both celebrities and fans alike can be found on the event floors, proudly displaying their elaborate costumes, worn in celebration of their favorite characters.

So, what is Comic-Con? Comic-Con is considered the biggest and most popular annual comic book, SyFy, Fantasy and popular arts convention. It is held in several locations around the world, including the U.S., Canada, India, Romania and the U.K. Special guests, easily recognizable to comic book and SyFy fans, are usually introduced along with new themes each year. This year, there were several special guests. Brian Michael Bendis (Writer, Ultimate Spider-Man, All New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men), Jon Bogdanove (Artist, Superman: Man of Steel), Michael Davis (Co-founder, Milestone Media) and Jose Delbo (Artist, Superman, Wonder Woman), were part of the line up. The level of talent and years of experience of these professional artists and writers brings make-believe to a whole new level.

As a Fantasy Fiction author, illustrator and all-around enthusiast of great movies, in my opinion, Comic-Con is definitely a place to check out, at least once in your life. This event's popularity has grown in leaps and bounds over the years. It grew from its humble beginnings as a one-day event, hosting only 100 people back in 1970, to drawing a crowd of 130,000 people this year.

Are you intrigued yet? It is not only an attraction for adults, but for children too (just be sure to use discretion if you plan to bring your child, due to the content of some advertisements, etc. and some very adult costumes). Also, here is the best part... You no longer have to book a flight and hotel to travel into deep space nine to see the Avengers! There are Comic-Con events held all over the U.S. Some locations are even within driving distance of Maplewood. So, be sure to check out additional locations below. See you there!
