Straightening the S Curves in South Orange Avenue
I am heartsick at the number of healthy trees that have been cut down in the Reservation along South Orange Avenue and at the ultimate project of widening the roadway and straightening the S curves. I believe the number of accidents along the curves was greatly reduced and the problem of accidents effectively eliminated when the divider was put in many years ago. The drive through the S curves is beautiful and inspiring. It provides a moment of intimate contact with nature that is hard to replicate in the dense, overdeveloped environment of our part of Essex County. The S curves also provide a natural brake that prevents cars from speeding along that portion of South Orange Avenue that includes the entrance to the Reservation at the Crest and the entrances and exits to the two condominium buildings just east of the Crest. Straightening the S curves will create a more danger than it will eliminate.
Who is responsible for this decision? Who is really benefiting from it? Was the public properly noticed of this project? And finally, can it be stopped before it's too late?
I haven't seen any Letters to the Editor or public comment about this. Isn't anyone else horrified by the disappearance of all those trees lining South Orange Avenue between Brookside Drive and the Crest and the prospect of more concrete and blacktop covering over our beautiful Reservation?
