Co-Defendant in Seton Hall Party Killing Gets 15 Years

Marcus Bascus, 23, admitted to giving Nicholas Welch, 29, the gun that killed one student and wounded four others in 2010.

The East Orange man who supplied the gun to the shooter in the 2010 killing of a college student at a Seton Hall off-campus party was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison.

Marcus Bascus, 23, must serve 85 percent of his 15-year prison term for his role in the killing of Jessica A. Moore, a 19-year-old sophomore from Virginia.

Bascus, who was facing murder and attempted murder charges, pleaded guilty on June 5 to conspiracy. Bascus admitted giving Nicholas Welch, 29, of East Orange, the gun that killed Moore, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Welch, who was convicted on March 31 of murder and attempted murder for the shooting of four other students at the party, is serving an 80-year prison term. Yvan Christophe, Nakeisha Vanterpool, Nicosia Henry and Daryl Elmore were also shot but survived the attack.

Welch, who lived in the 500 block of South Clinton Street in East Orange where the off-campus party was being held, was angered when he was thrown out of the private party by members of a fraternity on Sept. 25, 2010.

Welch got the gun from Bascus, returned and opened fire on the party filled with about 100 Seton Hall students.
