Police: Drunken Maplewood Man Gets Violent, Hurls Racial, Homophobic Slurs at Cops

A Morristown bar patron who called police to say he was assaulted found himself in handcuffs after showing signs of violent nature toward authorities, police said.

Daniel Ives, 21, of Maplewood, called police to report he had been assaulted at the Dark Horse Bar, a police report said. Police arrived just after 2 a.m. and found Ives standing on Dehart Street, the report said.

When officers arrived, Ives “appeared intoxicated and highly excited toward uniformed officers,” the report said. Police were explaining to Ives the complaint procedures for the assault, the report said, and Ives ignored the procedures, then began to yell “several racial remarks and profanities.”

Ives then ignored the officers’ commands to calm down and leave the area peacefully, and began to “flail his arms toward the officers while yelling profanities,” the report said. 

Ives was placed under arrest for his violent behavior toward officers and formally charged with creating a dangerous condition.

During his processing at Morristown Police Headquarters, Ives began to yell at officers in the room and called them “n------,” the homophobic slur “f-----,” and “racists,” the report said. Ives continued to ignore commands and when asked to place his signature on the fingerprint card, he drew a smiley face, the report said. 

The police report said Ives is an African-American.

While leaving the police station under the care of his sober girlfriend, police said, Ives and his twin sister – also intoxicated, according to police – again yelled profanities at the officers, forcing them to escort the man from the building.
