An Essex County Grand Jury has returned a seven count indictment charging Shawn Custis, 43, with the June 21, 2013 home invasion attack on a Millburn mother that was caught on a nanny cam, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced Friday.
The Newark grand jury indicted Custis on one count of attempted murder, one count of first degree robbery, one count of second degree burglary, one count of third degree endangering the welfare of a child, one count of third degree criminal restraint, one count of third degree theft, and one count of second degree aggravated assault, according to Assistant Prosecutor Jamel Semper, who is handling the case.
He is accused of entering the woman’s Millburn home at approximately 10 a.m, where she was caring for her two young children. A video released by Millburn police shows Custis assaulting the woman as her daughter sat on the living room couch and an 18-month-old son was asleep upstairs.
The victim sustained a concussion, chipped teeth, an injured lip, facial swelling and leg injuries.
Custis is being held on $750,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges in the indictment on Feb. 28, before Superior Court Judge Peter J. Vazquez.Custis, whose last know address was in Newark, was convicted 22 years ago of a similar incident in another quiet suburban town just outside of Philadelphia.
