A man was allegedly assaulted and robbed by five teenagers on Chancellor Avenue, according to Sgt. Christopher Black of the Maplewood Police Department.
The man, a 40-year-old from Harrison, NJ, told police he was standing on the corner of Chancellor Ave and 44th Street at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday when a group of approximately five teenagers assaulted him before taking his cell phone and a small amount of cash, said Black.
The man reported that one of the teenagers punched him in the face and tried to wrap his arm around him, but the man was able to escape, Black said. The teenagers ran towards Springfield Ave on Chancellor Ave and split up, he said.
Black described the teenagers as being between 15-17 years old and wearing dark clothing. The man did not see any weapons on the teenagers. Police called an ambulance, but the victim refused medical attention, said Black.
The detective bureau is currently investigating the incident.
