Police are searching for a man who fired a handgun into a crowd at Maplecrest Park on Sunday.
Police received several calls at about 5 p.m. from residents who reported a man in a hooded sweatshirt entered Maplecrest Park on Oakland Road with what appeared to be a handgun.
“The witnesses observed the male fire several shots in the direction of a group that was playing football in the park,” Maplewood Chief of Police Robert Cimino said in a written statement.
He then fled the park in a white vehicle driving northbound on Oakland Road, police said.
No one was injured in the shooting.
“This incident appears to have been directed toward a specific group of individuals playing football in the park and does not appear to be a random act,” Cimino said.
The Maplewood Detective Bureau is investigating the incident and is asking anyone with knowledge of the identity of the individuals involved in the football game, or information that may assist the investigation to contact Detective Sgt. Albert Sally at 973-762-1234.
