Police Feel 'Pretty Good' About Person of Interest in Unsolved Church Beating

Investigation progresses in brutal 2012 assault of a St. Joseph's Church rectory worker.

The vicious 2012 beating of a South Orange woman inside St. Joseph's Church rectory that shocked the community may be a step closer to being solved.

Maplewood Police recently said they are making progress in the case. In March, local blogger Joe Strupp reported that police had identified a person of interest but there was not enough evidence to make an arrest.

“The investigation has revealed certain things,” said Capt. John Perna last week, who said police feel "pretty good" about the person of interest. Perna said the case was a very difficult one, and that releasing any further details might compromise the investigation.

In March 2012, the woman was viciously assaulted by an intruder who threw her on the floor and stomped her. The woman suffered multiple face fractures and was left with vision and brain disabilities.
