Burglar Strikes in Maplewood, Cops Say

Maplewood Police officers gave chase on foot but alleged prowler ran away.

A report of a prowler breaking into a Hudson Avenue garage early Wednesday morning led Maplewood Police on an unsuccessful foot chase through the neighborhood in pursuit of the man, said Capt. John Perna.

The man escaped, but a search of the area led police to discover that two other garages and a car also were burglarized, and a bicycle and GPS unit were reported missing, said Perna.

When officers responded to a homeowner's call shortly after 3 a.m., they saw a man come out of the backyard and flee. Officers chased the subject on foot but lost him several blocks away, Perna said. No items were reported missing from the garage, which had been unlocked.

A check of the neighborhood revealed that down the block a garage and car were both broken into, with a bicycle taken from the garage and a GPS unit taken from the car, Perna said.

The neighborhood check also revealed that a garage on Coolidge Avenue had been opened; no items were reported missing, said Perna.

The Maplewood Police Department Detective Bureau is investigating these incidents. Perna reminded residents to secure their garages and automobiles when left unattended.
