Rash of Cell Phone Thefts Hit Maplewood, Cops Say
Three phones are taken in one week, all by teenagers.
A rash of cell phone thefts hit Maplewood recently, according to police reports.
A boy, described as approximately 17 years old, on a bicycle approached a Maplewood woman on Dunnell Road on July 16 at roughly 8:20 p.m. and asked to use her cell phone, Sgt. Christopher Black said. After the woman handed him the phone, he rode off on his bicycle heading south on Dunnell, Black said.
A teenage boy grabbed a fellow passenger’s cell phone before running off of the New Jersey Transit bus at Oberlin Street and Springfield Avenue on Friday at around 7 p.m., Black said.

A boy described as being between 15 and 18 years old riding a bicycle approached a Maplewood man on Springfield Avenue near Yale Street on Sunday at roughly 9:20 p.m., Black said. The boy asked to use the man’s cell phone and rode off with the phone toward Prospect Street, Black.
All incidents are under investigation by the Detective Bureau, Black said.
