Two people were killed and three others were seriously injured in a two-car accident Tuesday night at the intersection of South Fourth Street and Essex Avenue.

UPDATE: A 20-year-old man has been charged with vehicular homicide. Authorities said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash that killed two Maplewood residents, including a 16-year-old boy.

Two men were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 9 p.m. accident, according to Anthony Ambrose, chief of detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. The three others were seriously injured and taken to University Hospital in Newark, Ambrose said.

Ambrose said Wednesday morning more details will be released later in the day.
