DiVincenzo to Present State of the County Tuesday

Christie, Sweeney, Oliver to attend address at Essex County Hospital Center in Cedar Grove.

When Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. presents his 10th State of the County address on Tuesday, Feb. 19, he’ll deliver the address before an audience that will include Gov. Chris Christie, state Senate President Stephen Sweeney and state Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver.

The address, to be delivered at the Essex County Hospital Center, 204 Grove St. in Cedar Grove, begins at 7 p.m. and will focus on the progress the county has made over the past year. DiVincenzo is expected to stress the county’s accomplishments and offer a blueprint of the programs, events and progress being made throughout the county.

At last year’s address, DiVincenzo touted the county’s fiscal responsibility and improvement of county parks and recreation programs. Lieutenant Gov. Kim Guadagno, Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker, and a host of legislators and local elected officials attended the standing-room only event in 2012.

“I’m here to celebrate the successes of Essex County and its comeback,” Guadagno said last year. She addressed DiVincenzo with her remarks, saying, “You have reached across the street and across the aisle. We have seen in a bipartisan way. . . that you do what’s right for the people of our county, our city and our state.”

Booker also praised the partnership between the city of Newark and Essex County saying, “Every night you should be able to go home and say you gave it your best. . . Joe doesn’t just speak these words, he lives them.”

What we really need is to eliminate many of NJ's county governments. They may be worthwhile in more remote parts of the state but around here there is so much government that the county level interferes with the possibilities of local governments sharing services.

What would county employees working for Joe D.like Sheila Oliver and Theresa Ruiz, do?? They get a full-time paychecks from the county, but all the free time off they need to drive down to Trenton to collect another government paycheck!! What a racket.

Absolutely right, Adam. The last thing we need is for the county to spend like it does on parks, miniature golf and restaurants that *might* be a good long-term investment. I'll bet the county could return $10- to each household if they stopped erecting expensive signs with Joe Di's name and picture. Time fore a regime change. Remember, complacency brought us too many years of Sharpe James...
