Maplewood’s is currently headquartered in the cottage-like building in Memorial Park. The Township Committee is considering moving it across the road, to town hall.
Having the department in the building is wasteful in terms of maintaining its climate (heating it and cooling it is evidently expensive), Township Manager Joseph Manning said at the Township Committee meeting on April 7. And having it on separate computer and phone makes for inefficient communication. And one of the few benefits of the township’s recent layoffs is that there are a lot of open desks at Town Hall.
The idea was met with enthusiasm by the Township Committee; Mayor Vic De Luca said the idea “makes a lot of sense.” One lingering concern is what to do with the mostly empty building (afterschool programs currently operate out of the building, and would likely continue despite the possible move) if the recreation department clears out.
“I don’t really know,” Manning said of plans for the building’s future. “Maybe someone would come forward and use the offices.”
