Show Some Love for HK Project's Scholarship Program

Event will raise money to help send a talented local student to college.

HK Project will host a Valentine's Day fundraiser to support its Scholarship Fund on Friday, Feb. 22 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Maplewood Tennis Club ("The Little Club").

This is the first year that HK has hosted a fundraiser solely for the scholarship program.

"The program is a very important part of HK and we would really like the community's support," said Executive Director Amy Jo Curran.

The evening will include music by local band 3rd Gear, appetizers and desserts and drinks (a cash bar).

HK Project Scholarship Program awards a high school senior, who lives in Maplewood or South Orange, a $5,000 scholarship to be used for an undergraduate degree at the college of his or her choice. The recipient is selected based on his/her work within the community, academic achievement and financial need. (See application attached to this article at a PDF).

Since HK launched the program in 2010, the scholars have included:

Alexandra Fagundez 2010 - Rutgers
DeShawn Gray 2011 - Widener
Nethaniah (Tonya) Josma 2012 - Seton Hall

Curran said that while in past years HK chose scholars based on the amount of time he or she had devoted to volunteerism, their need and their academic record, this year would be slightly different.

"We are really focusing on what they have done, something that has made a difference to someone or something."

Curran said she would like to see something "out of the box" and meaningful that has made a difference in the scholar's life as well as in the lives of others.

Tickets are available online at www.hkproject.org/events or by sending a check to: HK Project, 515 Valley Street, Maplewood, NJ 07040 (please write Valentines in the memo line).
