So says Jaidan, a student in Ms. Stacey Padalino's afternoon 4th grade science and math class at Seth Boyden School in the South Orange-Maplewood School District.
Jaidan and his classmates were treated to a special appearance by guest teacher Erik Mann (father of classmate Ethan). By day an IT executive and consultant, Mann is an amateur competitive glider pilot and has performed weather forecasting for numerous gliding competitions.
On Friday, Mann brought four Kestrel mini-weather stations to Seth Boyden so that students could work in groups to make measurements of wind speed, pressure, dew point, and temperature around the school grounds (they also observed wind direction, cloud type and cloud cover). The students compared their observations to the forecasted and professionally observed weather and then discussed potential reasons for any differences they found.
"I never actually knew how the weather man got the weather," wrote Brian in a thank-you letter to Mr. Mann, "and now I do. Also you did it in such a fun way I won't forget."
Meanwhile, the entire 2nd grade class from Seth Boyden spent the day at the Trailside Nature Center in the Watchung Reservation in Mountainside, NJ (see video attached). The second graders enjoyed a slide show explaining the changes found in nature in the autumn. They then hit the trails — literally — where they were led in groups by naturalists to see those changes in action.
