Residents who want to participate in Maplewood's 2013 community collaborative art project, 'Circles to Squares,' which will culminate in a full-scale outdoor installation at the town's July 4 celebration, can join a free workshop at 1978 Maplewood Arts Center on Saturday from 9am to noon.
Sponsored by 1978 Maplewood Arts Center and Post 10120 VFW Maplewood, the project is the brainchild of local artist Benjamin John Kaufman. were filled by local residents with decorated canvas, fabric or crochet. (Check out the 2009 project and the 2011 project).
For 2013, the circles will be swapped out with squares. The goal: to create an art project the entire community can be involved in.

"The project has evolved," said Kaufman. "It has to do with how much effort goes into making the squares, which is much more than making a hoop."
"Instead of having kids throw paint at squares on July 4th we will make a long cardboard wall for them to throw paint at - like little Jackson Pollocks," said Kaufman. "The wall will snake through the gallery of grids we erect to display the squares people have made."
"We very much want people to participate as families and we will make [squares] available," said Kaufman. Squares are available until June 30 or when supplies run out.
Kaufman will be at 1978 the entire day on Saturday for people who have not yet picked up a square or who would like some help with decorating their squares.
