Maplewood Cools Off at the Library

The string of sultry days caused an uptick in visitors to the Maplewood Library.

Although the worst of the wicked heat spell seems to be behind us, at least for now, the weather has meant a surge in visitors to the cool confines of the .

"The library is filled with people everyday and circulation is up," said Teen Librarian Irene Langlois. "Although some of our popularity may be attributed to air conditioning, we also feel that the more welcoming spaces for teens and adults contributes to the library being a choice destination."

There are also a slew of activities going on for teens and tweens this summer. "The Teen summer reading club is called 'Own the Night,'" said Langlois. "We decided to do two afterhours programs to go along with the theme where the teens have the place to themselves."

The program kicked off on Tuesday night with a popular nighttime "Zombies v. Vampires Scavenger Hunt."

Next Wednesday from 7-9 p.m., the will host an afterhours concert with live music from local alternative rock band 8Bit.

"We hope that these programs (and others like them) will encourage tweens and teens to see the library as their space, their library," Langlois said
