In addition to the usual police business of protecting and serving, the Maplewood Police Department regularly reaches out to the community. Their auxiliary branch, composed of civic-minded Maplewood citizens, is very active (prospective volunteers can contact them at MPA690@comcast.net or 973-762-3400, ext. 437).
Each year, the department hosts the National Night Out Against Crime event, which is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, encourage participation in local anti-crime programs and strengthen police-community partnerships. Noted crime fighter Batman showed up too in 2008 (actually it was a sergeant from the force dressed up).
In 2007, the department shifted to a gleaming new facility on Springfield Avenue. The chief is Robert Cimino.
