Maplewood Police report SUV taken Sunday afternoon on Boyden Ave.
Two men allegedly stole a car Sunday afternoon after the car's owner had pulled over to check for a flat tire, said Lt. Dean Naddeo of the Maplewood Police Department. The owner, a Maplewood resident, had stopped his Porsche Cayenne SUV on Boyden Avenue near Orchard Road at around 2 p.m. Sunday to check if his tire was flat, said Naddeo, who said the man got out of the car and left the keys in the ignition. While the man was out of the car, two men jumped in and drove off toward Irvington, said Naddeo. There was no force used and no weapons were shown, Naddeo said. Police are investigating the incident.

Man identified as suspect in Maplewood incident believed to be involved in other armed robberies in area.
The Essex County Sheriff's Office posted a $5,000 cash reward on Thursday for information that leads to the arrest of two men wanted in connection with eleven armed robberies of convenience stores, liquor stores and gas stations in towns in three North Jersey counties since February 1, said Sheriff Armando Fontoura. One of the men has been identified as having robbed and shot the owner of MS&K Confectionery at 745 Prospect Street on April 1, said Fontoura. The man was also recently identified as allegedly robbing a Belleville convenience store on April 14 and being part of a two-man armed robbery at a liquor store in Linden on April 17. In both incidents, the man was carrying a red messenger bag on his shoulder, which contained zipties …

Maplewood Police believe two separate incidents are related.
Thieves stole a cellphone from a woman and headphones from a teenage boy in two incidents that police believe are related, said Maplewood Police Chief Robert Cimino. In the first incident, three men in a light-colored car stopped a 16-year-old boy walking near the intersection of Summit Avenue and Plymouth Avenue last Wednesday around 6:15 p.m. and asked directions. When the boy approached the car, one of the men grabbed his headphones and the car drove away. Less than fifteen minutes later, at 6:27 p.m., an 18-year-old woman was walking on Tuscan Road when a light-colored car pulled up and stopped near her, said Cimino. Two men got out of the car and took her cell phone out of her hand before getting back into the car and driving away, …
The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.
One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transportation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is this a reasonable proposal? According to a 2011 Mothers Against Drunk Driving report, the latest available data shows New Jersey ranked 31st out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia) in drunken driving injuries and deaths. That year, there were 193 DUI fatalities, MADD said. About 10,000 deaths nationwide a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American …

Gubernatorial candidate speaks in Newark Monday about the 'scourge' of gun violence
The likely Democratic candidate for governor accused incumbent Chris Christie on Monday of supporting "shallow" gun control legislation in order to avoid alienating conservatives elsewhere in the country. “This governor calibrates every decision he makes with an eye towards 2016. He calibrates every decision he makes with an eye towards making sure it plays well with voters in the cornfields of Iowa, instead of standing up for what’s right for the people and neighborhoods of New Jersey,” state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex) said during a press conference held at Good Neighbor Baptist Church in Newark. Buono is expected to win next month’s primary, but is an underdog in the November governor’s race against the popular Christie, who is …

Firefighters and technicians work to halt oily substance leaking onto sidewalk.
The Maplewood Fire Department and the Nutley Hazardous Materials Team halted the spill of an oily substance that had begun leaking from a Springfield Ave. business's basement onto the street Wednesday morning, said Chief Michael Dingelstedt. Maplewood Engine 32 responded to a report of an oil odor in the basement of 1878 Springfield Ave. on Wednesday shortly after 11 a.m., said Dingelstedt. Firefighters found an oily residue mixed with water in both open sump pump wells in the basement, which was also being pumped onto the sidewalk through the pump discharge in front of the building, he said. Firefighters put absorbent pads in the sump pump wells to help prevent the oil from being pumped onto the sidewalk, and called the Nutley Hazardous…

Unlocked cars and garages are targeted, police said.
Half a dozen Plymouth Avenue households had items including bicycles, GPS and in one case, a briefcase, taken from unlocked cars and garages early Tuesday morning, said Capt. John Perna of the Maplewood Police Department. Someone entered and rummaged through cars parked in the driveways of four homes on Plymouth Ave and one on Burnett Terrace, and entered detached garages at two other houses on Plymouth, taking a bicycle from each, said Perna. One of the bicycles was recovered on the premises it was taken from and the other bicycle was recovered on a neighboring property, Perna said. All of the cars and garages had been left unlocked, said Perna. Tom Reingold said that his wife's bicycle was taken out of their yard and left leaned up …
