@ sgyaft - My tax dollars support public schools...certainly not all private schools are created equal and the same goes for public. You can't say all public schools are great. There's irrefutable data that there is a major problem with our educational institutions in this country. Watch Waiting for Superman. That will give you a better picture. I also speak from experience...I went to a public …   more ›

Three Announce Candidacy for Board of Education

Wayne Eastman, Madhu Pai and Jeff Bennett announce that they will run as a ticket.

One incumbent and two newcomers have announced that they are running for the Board of Education of South Orange-Maplewood on a joint ticket that focuses on rigor and enrichment, and questions the implementation of de-leveling. Wayne Eastman — who has served on the Board of Education for 6 years — is joined by Madhu Pai and Jeff Bennett. The other two incumbents up for re-election are Mark Gleason and Jennifer Payne-Parrish. Both have told Patch that they are still considering whether or not they will run again. Terms are for three years each. There are nine seats total on the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education. Information about filing for nomination can be found here. The deadline to file is Feb. 27. Elections currently are slated …

Deadline to File for School Board Election Is Feb. 27

Three seats are up for grabs. It is not known yet if incumbents will run again.

The School District of South Orange and Maplewood has announced the nominating process for school board elections even as the Board of Education looks to discuss the implications of a new law allowing such bodies to move their elections from April to November. Currently, the Board of Education election is scheduled for April 17, 2012. “There are three seats open for candidates to fill,” announced Business Administrator and Board Secretary Cheryl Schneider. “A full term on the school board runs for three years.” Those three seats are currently occupied by Jennifer Payne-Parrish, Wayne Eastman and former Board of Education President Mark Gleason. None have indicated their plans for the future as yet. The Board of Education will discuss …

It's Football Friday!

Local school kids are getting their jerseys on.

The note went out to Seth Boyden parents on Thursday: In celebration of the Super Bowl, Vice Principal Raquel Horn was asking staff and students to wear a football jersey or t-shirt to school this Friday, February 3, to represent their favorite football team in preparation for the Super Bowl. Students were welcome to wear shirts and jerseys representing any team — even one on which they play. Participation was not required. Did you send your child to school in a Giants' jersey today? (or a Patriots' t-shirt, for that matter?) Upload your photos here or tell us in the comments!

News-Record: Hua Mei Will Not Reapply

The founders of the proposed Mandarin-immersion charter decided not to reapply based on comments made by Gov. Christie.

The News-Record of Maplewood and South Orange is reporting that the founders of the Hua Mei Charter School have decided not to apply a third time to the state for approval. The founders had proposed a K-5 Mandarin-immersion charter school that would operate in Maplewood and draw mainly from the South Orange-Maplewood and West Orange school districts — although spots could have been available for students outside of those districts if space allowed. The school would have opened as a K-2 school in 2012 and expanded thereafter. The application was rejected for the second time earlier this month when eight urban charters were approved while no suburban charters were given the green light. Both Governor Christie and NJ State Acting Education …

NJ Spotlight: State Test Scores Reveal Some Gains, Widening Achievement Gap

Budget cuts cost New Jersey school districts $1 billion, with some of the poorest districts paying the biggest price.

The annual release of New Jersey school test scores can be maddening in its mixed messages, according to NJ Spotlight. On the one hand, the 2010-2011 scores released yesterday rose slightly or at least held steady overall in a majority of grades, a good thing for what have been tough times. In math, there were some notable gains for any given year. On the other, state officials are quick to point out that the gaps in achievement between rich and poor, white and minority, are wide and in some instances widening alarmingly. Those results are unsurprising, insofar as they reflect nationwide trends. But the findings have taken on added weight under Gov. Chris Christie and his education reform agenda, much of it aimed at districts where the …

Columbia Boys Basketball Rolling Again

Cougar boys having fantastic follow up season

As the regular season winds down, with championship season right around the corner, the Columbia boys basketball team finds itself in a similar position to the Cougar squad a year ago. At 12-3, the Cougars are playing as well as just about anyone in Essex County, which is a good thing, considering the County tournament is already underway. They've been led by a stingy defense, which has allowed just under 47 points per game. Their high ball pressure defense has been the key, leading to a transition game which is a large part of Columbia's offensive identity. "Defense has been the key to victory," said second year Cougar head coach Eddie Turner. "We put a lot of pressure on the man on the ball. Everyone else mans up and it forces the ball …
