Winchester Gardens is one of the oldest retirement communities in the U.S.

When Marcus L. Ward Jr. inheritedMore the estate of his father, a former New Jersey governor, at the beginning of the 20th Century, he decided to create a place where mature gentlemen could enjoy their retirement.

The executors of his father's estate purchased 50 acres in Maplewood and hired two distinguished architects, John Russell Pope, designer of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, and the landscape architecture firm of Frederick Law Olmstead, which had created New York's Central Park. The resulting retirement facility opened in 1927.

Today, Winchester Gardens is open to both men and women, of all faiths, and includes a continuing care community.
