In addition to the usual police business of protecting and serving, the Maplewood Police Department regularly reaches…More out to the community. Their auxiliary branch, composed of civic-minded Maplewood citizens, is very active (prospective volunteers can contact them at MPA690@comcast.net or 973-762-3400, ext. 437).
Each year, the department hosts the National Night Out Against Crime event, which is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, encourage participation in local anti-crime programs and strengthen police-community partnerships. Noted crime fighter Batman showed up too in 2008 (actually it was a sergeant from the force dressed up).
In 2007, the department shifted to a gleaming new facility on Springfield Avenue. The chief is Robert Cimino.
The Maplewood Municipal Court, located in the same building as the police department, tries cases involving offenses…More that occurred within the township's borders. According to its website, the court hears indictable offenses, disorderly or petty disorderly offenses, township ordinance complaints including weights and measures, moving violations (traffic), parking violations and DWIs (driving while intoxicated).
The court also offers the Maplewood Mediation Program, through which people can resolve select complaints and disputes without risking a criminal conviction for any party involved.
