A perfect day for math geeks, Einstein lovers, and admirers of pie.
Thursday, March 14 is International Pi Day, a celebration of the Greek letter that is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter -- aka 3.141592653. It is celebrated on that day because the digits in the date correspond with the first three digits of pi. March 14 also is Albert Einstein’s birthday. Because Einstein lived in Princeton, NJ for over twenty years when he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study, the town hosts Pi Day events such as pie eating contests, an Einstein look-alike contest and this year, an international video contest. Find out more on the Princeton Pi Day Facebook page. Closer to home, Able Baker is currently offering Pi Day cookies decorated like slices of pie (see photo). On …

Maplewood bakery bakes cookies in honor of author's birthday.
Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that encourages children to celebrate reading. This year, it will be held on Friday, March 1, the day before the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. Over at The Able Baker in Maplewood, baker Maddie Weltchek was busy decorating whimsical, striped Cat in the Hat cookies in preparation for Friday. Check out Patch's video, and wish Dr. Seuss an early happy birthday.

Local businesses are sometimes affected by their customers' New Year's resolutions -- but it's usually just temporary.
January is the time when people resolve to change their unhealthy habits and turn over a new leaf. Often, New Year's resolutions revolve around health and fitness. Some Maplewood businesses, such as gyms, fitness centers, and health food stores, report a definite uptick in business this month. "January is always the most popular time of year as customers make New Year’s resolutions to get in shape and lead a healthier lifestyle," said Maria Calado, owner of Pro Elite Nutrition on Springfield Avenue. "We typically see an increase in weight loss supplements, protein powder and multivitamins sales. In addition to that people are looking for cleansing supplements and also natural stress and sleep aids." Some gyms gain new customers and see …

Halloween is exactly three weeks away. Local businesses around town are displaying holiday decor and merchandise; some festive, some edible, and some downright spooky. Cupcake Corral has mummy cupcakes; Olive & Lizzy has a spooky purple glitter skull; No. 165 boasts a ghostly candy jar contest (guess how many and win a prize). Perch has a charming George Eliot quote in its window about "delicious autumn" But look more closely, and you will spy some of the creepiest old family portraits you've ever laid eyes on. Walk slowly past them, and be prepared for a fright. (Warning: small children and easily haunted grownups might want to cover their eyes). But perhaps the scariest thing of all is what can currently be found at Kings: on a shelf …

Hard to believe, but the bakery on Maplewood Avenue turns one on Monday.
When Able Baker opened its doors on Oct. 1, 2011, wife-and-husband owners Julie and Thomas Pauly weren't quite sure what to expect. Though Julie had been running a web-based baking business for a couple of years after making the switch from a long-time career in retail, she had never owned her own place. On that first day, "we sold out of everything in one and a half hours," she said. Since then, the bakery has continued to attract a large and dedicated customer base, becoming a popular addition to the Village. The combination of freshly made, high quality scones, cookies, brownies and cakes -- plus the place's cheerful, welcoming vibe made it a hit from the beginning. "Plus there was a little luck involved," she said. The La Colombe …

A sleepover for stuffed animals, cake decorating for kids, and tonight, an Artist Reception.
Maplewood Memorial Library has been busy this week. The library hosted a Stuffed Animal Sleepover for children and their stuffed animals on Monday. On Tuesday, Able Baker Julie Pauly taught 30 children the art of cupcake decorating. Tonight, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. the library will host a Summer Art and Music reception in conjunction with its July and August exhibits of two Maplewood artists: sculptor B. John Kaufman, creator of the annual July 4th townwide art project, and acclaimed fine arts photographer Joy Yagid. Columbia High School student Rueben Morris will play the harp, and both artists will discuss their work. "I'm very happy to have my work up in my local library," said Yagid. "Maplewood's libraries are a great asset to the town …

Waldo was hiding in plain sight at Able Baker.
Two local children found Waldo hiding out at Able Baker just as [words] Bookstore Event Coordinator Sara Nevius -- who is managing the Where's Waldo month-long event -- strolled in for an iced coffee yesterday afternoon. Lucas (9) and Celeste (6) Intagliata spied the little guy idling near the espresso machine, and promptly turned him in for an "I Found Waldo at____" card. According to their mother, this is the tenth Waldo the siblings have collected. "They've been having a good time looking for him," she said. There is still time to go Waldo hunting at twenty Maplewood businesses (see the complete list here), before the grand prize celebration on Tuesday, July 31 at 4 p.m. at [words]. Collect eight cards, and claim your Waldo button at…
