Gay and Lesbian Manners in Maplewood

Steven Petrow, aka Mr. Manners, discusses his new book at Words.

Sometimes the obvious just isn't so obvious. For instance, is there really a need for a book on gay manners? Steven Petrow thinks so. His new book, “Complete Gay & Lesbian Manners: The Definitive Guide to LGBT Life,” addresses some ticklish subjects that aren't tackled in traditional etiquette guides. “Gay people don't set the table differently. They don't treat guests differently,” said Petrow, who was at Words Bookstore, the fifth stop on his book tour on Friday evening. Petrow went onto explain why he wrote the book. “Instances such as planning a same sex wedding or having a family that doesn't fit the mold,” explained Petrow, “traditional books don't address these situations.”  Steven Petrow is Mr. Manners, and he said he wrote the …

Author Allen Barra at Words for Book Signing

South Orange resident and best-selling author to talk about new Yogi Berra bio

The opening of the new Yankees stadium has been accompanied by a slew of books about the Yankees. Former Yankees manager Joe Torre put his pinstripe memories to print, and scandal-stirring scribes swiped at George Steinbrenner and A-Rod. One Yankee tome that shouldn't get lost in the shuffle despite its lack of controversy is South Orange resident Allen Barra's comprehensive account of the life of baseball's master of the malaprop, Yogi Berra: Eternal Yankee. The best-selling author takes his readers on a journey through Berra’s childhood, his days in the Navy, the championship years with the New York Yankees and everything that has come since. It includes commentary from countless baseball greats, such as Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, …

Are You Strong Enough to Be My Dad?

Local author publishes book of essays on divorce and fatherhood

This may sound odd, but Joel Schwartzberg’s new book "The 40-Year-Old Version: Humoirs of a Divorced Dad" may just be the perfect Father’s Day present. The book contains 40 essays—most light and humorous, and some raw and dark—dealing with the realities of being a father, divorced or not. Maplewood and South Orange residents may recognize Schwartzberg’s name from his days as a humor columnist for the News-Record. Schwartzberg, now a senior new-media producer for the television program NOW on PBS, gave up the News-Record column several years ago but since then has carved out a successful freelance writing career for himself and has been published in The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, babble.com, NJ Monthly, The New York Post, The New …
