New backpacks, old friends and a few tears marked the first day back to school for students in grades K-7 and 9 in Maplewood and South Orange. Patch will have more photos later today, and tomorrow when 8th graders and Columbia High School students return to school. For now, share your photos with us by uploading them to this article.

Teacher Letters Are in the Mail and the Mailboxes

Students compare notes on what to expect.

After weeks of waiting, the "teacher letters" have arrived for most elementary students in South Orange and Maplewood. Letters addressed to students and their guardians indicate the name of the teacher for the 2012-13 school year and often include a list of required supplies. Younger students are likely to receive a letter from the teacher, as well. Then the phone calls and, increasingly, texts and e-mails begin. While the youngest children in the district may find their parents asking questions, students as young as second grade make their own phone calls. Jason, a rising South Orange second grader, found out the name of his teacher and asked his brother what to expect from her. Then he called friends to find out their class assignments…

Photos: Back to School for South Orange and Maplewood

Two years ago, Doug Zacker shared his daughters' first day back at school at South Mountain School. The photos are just as fresh today.

The majority of the 6,500-plus students of the South Orange-Maplewood School District are headed for schools and classrooms this morning. Two years ago, local family photographer Doug Zacker shared these images of his family's first day back at school. They're so lovely, we thought we'd share them again with a now much bigger Maplewood Patch audience. Enjoy! (And upload your own photos if you like!)
