Bikes Stolen from Train Stations

Following a reader's report of a theft in August, two more bikes have been stolen in September from the Maplewood train station and two have been stolen in South Orange.

Maplewood police reported last week that a bicycle parked at the Maplewood train station was stolen. The bicycle was the second reported stolen this month from the Maplewood train station. There have also been similar reports in South Orange. On Wednesday, Sep. 16, police say a red and black Haro Light Line mountain bike was taken from the bike rack at the train station. The bike was secured with a chain to the rack in the morning. Despite the chain, it was gone when the owner returned later in the day. Six days before that, a Maplewood resident reported that his Trek bicycle was stolen from the Maplewood Train Station sometime between 07:30 a.m. and 7:22 p.m. South Orange Police have noted that two bicycles have been stolen from South …

Are Bike Thieves Targeting the Train Station?

A Patch reader says his bike was stolen from near the tracks.

A number of bicycles have been stolen from the Township over the last couple of months. The reported incidents have varied, with some bikes stolen from garages, from porches and from schools. In one case from earlier this month, juveniles stole bikes from other youths following a scuffle. Now, a Patch reader reports that his bicycle was stolen from the train station. According to an email sent to Patch in response to an article about bike theft, a Maplewood resident's bicycle locked to a rack at the train station was stolen earlier this week. It is the first report we have come across saying that bikes have been stolen from the station. We are waiting for word from the police if there have been other reported instances. Earlier this summer…

More Bicycles Stolen

In one report, some kids took other kids' bikes by force.

Police have reported that more bicycles have been stolen in the Township, including an incident where juvenile suspects took bikes from other juveniles with force. The newest reported thefts follow a number of bicycle theft reports in Maplewood this summer. On Tuesday, Aug. 18, two youths reportedly had their bicycles stolen by force. According to a police report, a 12-year-old was struck in the head, and knocked down to the ground near Oakland Road. Police found two youths who matched the descriptions of the suspects. The juveniles, who were not named because of their age, were remanded to the Essex County Youth House. The stolen bicycles were returned to the victims. The following day, a Maplewood resident told police that his Mongoose …

Maplewood Police Post Bike Safety Tips

The force recommends using heavy duty locks and other measures.

After a number of bicycle thefts this month and earlier this summer, the Maplewood police has posted some anti-theft tips on their Web site. Most of the advice is fairly intuitive—they recommend chaining up bicycles when they're outside and locking garage doors when they are stored. The police say that bike theives are often juveniles, and that they will frequently ride two to a bike, looking for unsecured bicycles. Bikes, police say, can be sold for quick cash on the street. The tips are included below. The Maplewood Police Department would like to remind all bicycle owners to secure and lock their bikes, both on the road and at home. We are in the midst of the warmer part of the year when the vast majority of bike thefts historically …

Maplewood/Millburn Bike Path Vote May Be Next Week

Some questions about the path remain.

After years of work, the proposed bicycle path that would link Millburn with Maplewood may be coming to a vote at the next Millburn Township Committee meeting. The committee heard a presentation about the path during its July meeting, and put off a vote until August because of questions. Tom McDermott, a Millburn committee member, wanted to hear the police's opinion about the width of the road. McDermott said he's not sure if his questions about safety have been answered and hopes there is a discussion at the meeting Tuesday night about the issues. "We have plenty of bikers in town," he said. "We just have to be cautious about what we endorse." The committee would be encouraging people to bike on Glen Avenue, he said. It's not completely …

Police: More Bicycles Stolen

Culprits in cases were reportedly underage.

Two bicycles have been stolen from Maplewood residents this month, police say. In both cases, witnesses reported that the culprits were underage. The reported thefts follow a number of similar cases from earlier this summer. On Thursday, Aug. 6, three juveniles reportedly stole a Diamondback brand mountain bike from an open garage on Hughes Street. The bike’s owner reportedly witnessed the theft. On Monday, Aug. 10, an Orchard Street resident also saw a juvenile try to steal a bicycle from his home. Police say the man saw the unidentified youth attempt to remove a bicycle form a screened-in porch. The suspect fled the area along with four other young accomplices. Officers found them on Boyden Avenue. The bicycle was returned to its owner …

Police: More Bicycles Stolen

More bikes disappear from township, and arrests are made.

Thieves have targeted bicycles throughout July, with a total of six bikes reported stolen in the township in five reported incidents (the previous two are described here). Thankfully, in two cases the bikes were recovered. On Tuesday, July 21, an Oakland Road resident told police her garage had been broken into and that a mountain bike, customized with an attached child seat, was stolen. The theft, the woman reportedly told police, occurred sometime between July 2 and July 21. A couple of days beforehand, on July 18, South Orange police arrested 18-year-old Newark resident Emanuel Holiday for outstanding warrants. Holiday, police say, had a bike that was similar to the one stolen from the Oakland Road garage. The bike’s owner reportedly …

Thieves Target Two-Wheelers

Two Bikes and a Motorcycle are reported stolen in the Township

So far in July, Maplewood police haven’t reported any cars stolen in the township. That doesn’t mean that thieves have stopped looking for vehicles. Judging from three incidents in mid-July, they may be looking for smaller rides. On Thursday, July 16, a Maplewood resident told police that his son’s mountain bike was stolen. The bike, a Cannondale C300 mountain, was reportedly left unsecured outside of Jefferson School on Ridgewood Road. The boy entered the school at approximately 2 p.m., and found his bike was missing when he left the school. That same afternoon, a 12-speed bicycle was stolen from outside of a Plymouth Avenue house. As in the Jefferson school incident, the bike, a St. Tropez, was reportedly unsecured. The following Sunday…

Bicycle Network Questions Raised in Millburn

Officials have concerns about safety given the width of the road.

It'll be August before Millburn's Township Committee moves forward with a proposal to create a bicycle path network that could connect Millburn with Maplewood. The plan would create a network of bike lanes in Millburn and may link Millburn to Maplewood. Maplewood recently hired Urbana Consulting to create the link. At a Committee meeting on Tuesday night, Millburn officials heard a report from a consultant hired to plan the network. Some committee members had questions about safety. The first phase of the bicycle network would stripe the shoulder of the road, although there is no specific bicycle lane planned. Mark Gordon of Urbana Consulting said grates along the road, that are not "bicycle friendly", should be replaced. Additionally, …

Current standards for lane width call for 14 foot wide lanes. That would not leave much space for a shoulder, but on the other hand, 14 foot wide lanes are considered wide enough for cars and bicycles to share, side-by-side. Remember, you car is only 5.5 feet wide. Many cyclists refuse to use the road shoulder, citing it as unsafe. Legally, there is no law in any state requiring cyclists to use …   more ›

Bike Network Connecting Maplewood to Millburn Discussed

The bicycle path on Glen Avenue could be in place this fall.

Cyclists may have a new dedicated bike path connecting downtown Maplewood with downtown Millburn by the fall. Millburn's Township Committee is slated to hear a report about the proposed bike path that would run from Brookside Drive to Ridgewood Road during its next meeting on July 21. The committee will decide if it should move forward on the plan—which would cost about $10,000 to implement—but it remains unclear if it will vote on the matter at its next meeting. Daniel Baer, Millburn committee member who has been working on the project, said the project includes striping along Glen Avenue, road markers with the bicycle symbol, kiosks with information about the path and signs. In addition to running along Glen Avenue, the path would link …
