State Health Commissioner Praises Summer Blood Donation Program

New Jersey Health Commissioner Mary E. O’Dowd praises a blood donation program that targeted blood drives in the work place and increased the number of drives in New Jersey by 450 this summer.

The Maplewood Volunteer First Aid Squad is hosting a blood drive on Sunday, Feb. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in order "to offset the seasonal blood shortage." Who can donate blood? According to the Red Cross,you must: * Note: Healthy means that you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, healthy also means that you are being treated and the condition is under control. Before you head out to donate, remember to: See you on Sunday!

Valerie Fund Blood Drive a Success

The Valerie Fund held its second annual Sickle Cell Awareness Blood Drive on Saturday at Seton Hall in conjunction with The Three Doctors Foundation's annual health walkathon. The organization achieved its goal of bringing in new blood donors of African descent—nearly three times as many as at its first drive less than a year ago—who may be matches for local children with sickle cell disease. Exact matches for children afflicted by the disease—who often require blood transfusions to stave off strokes that can lead to learning disabilities or even death—are only found among donors who share an ethnic background with the recipient. Valerie Fund Holds Sickle Cell Awareness Blood Drive on Saturday

The Maplewood-based charity joins forces with the Three Doctors Foundation to Promote Health Education at Seton Hall.

On July 25, beginning at 10 a.m., the Valerie Fund will hold its second Annual Sickle Cell Awareness Blood Drive in collaboration with The Three Doctors Foundation Annual Health Walkathon. The event is hosted by the Seton Hall University Pre-Medical/Dental Program at the South Orange campus, 400 South Orange Ave. This joint event aims to increase blood donations from people of African descent, which are needed to help save the lives of children with sickle cell disease.  The event is also meant to increase sickle cell education among the population most affected by the disease and to promote attention to personal health.
