Maplewood in January: More Kickboxing, Fewer Cupcakes?

Local businesses are sometimes affected by their customers' New Year's resolutions -- but it's usually just temporary.

  January is the time when people resolve to change their unhealthy habits and turn over a new leaf. Often, New Year's resolutions revolve around health and fitness. Some Maplewood businesses, such as gyms, fitness centers, and health food stores, report a definite uptick in business this month. "January is always the most popular time of year as customers make New Year’s resolutions to get in shape and lead a healthier lifestyle," said Maria Calado, owner of Pro Elite Nutrition on Springfield Avenue. "We typically see an increase in weight loss supplements, protein powder and multivitamins sales. CKO Kickboxing Comes to Town

New gym opens on Springfield Avenue; offering free trial week.

  CKO Kickboxing, a new business at 1933 Springfield Avenue owned by Maplewood residents Tara and James (JJ) Connell, celebrated its ribbon cutting on Saturday. Mayor Vic DeLuca and Township Committeeman Jerry Ryan joined the couple to cut the ribbon. Connell said she began going to a CKO Kickboxing studio five years ago after having her first child. "I was looking for an activity that would not only help me get back into shape postpartum, but that also would be enough fun to motivate me to stick with it," said Connell. She and her husband moved with their three children to Maplewood and the couple decided to open a CKO here.
