Last Chance: Cherry Blossom Festival Ends Sunday

This weekend is the last chance to celebrate.

The 36th annual Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival, sponsored by Aetna, ends Sunday. This weekend will be your last chance to enjoy the beautiful sight. Bring a jacket as the forecast is calling for rain throughout the day Sunday. The recent stretch of warm weather forced the early bloom of thousands of the park's 4,300 trees, attracting a crush of sightseers throughout the festival. In late March, about 25 percent of trees had already blossomed, kicking off the four- to five- week bloom season about 10 days early, according to Kate Hartwyk, director of the county's division of cultural and historic affairs.
