The Art Studio in Maplewood has been bringing children, art and nature together for six years.
A secret garden with a tree house is not the usual place to hold an art class. But for Susan Cohen Harris' Art Studio in Maplewood, it is. “Now remember we talked about Frida Kahlo last week...” Cohen Harris asks her charges, a mix of second and third graders as she shepherds them into the garden. They beg to go up into the tree house. Cohen Harris' studio is a two story carriage house. The bottom is filled with everything from gardening tools to various boxes of colorful things that could inspire imagination. The second story is a light and airy space with a big table. New mothers are upping their consumption of social networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to help stay connected.
According to a recently released report by BabyCenter, moms of young children are increasingly using social media. Sixty three percent of the 25,000 women questioned reported being active on social networks, up from 11 percent in a similar study in 2006. Patch spoke with a few local moms to see if BabyCenter’s results were accurate for the moms in our area. Maplewood resident Danielle Friedland, 34, is mother to a 3 1/2-year-old daughter and is pregnant with her second child. The summer reading group kicks off with a bang.
Why wait for summer weather to start summer reading? Maplewood Memorial Library’s annual Summer Reading Club began with a bang on Monday night. It was the “first night of summer,” according to one gleeful fourth grader who finished school that day, and how better to celebrate than with a concert at the library featuring the Tantrums and SisterSing/SisterString? The event, originally planned to be held outdoors, was moved inside, but no matter. Both bands are composed of local parents with “musical talents and a great sense of humor,” according to Jane Folger, Head of Children’s Services at the library.
