Week of events culminates in June 9 Festival in Memorial Park. A highlight: a forum on bullying with parents of Tyler Clementi.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker wlll kick off the annual 2013 North Jersey Pride Festival, a day-long event on Sunday, June 9 from Noon to 6 p.m. at Memorial Park in Maplewood. The festival is the culmination of a full week of events in Maplewood and South Orange for the community of LGBT residents and supportive allies. The events are designed to focus on the importance of supporting Marriage Equality and LGBT youth, said the executive director of the non-profit North Jersey Pride, C.J. Prince. The festival has expanded to a week of events that will draw attendees from across the state, said Prince. Olivia Baker is singled out for achievements at Penn Relays.
Columbia High School junior Olivia Baker, who was named the Most Outstanding High School Girls Athlete of the Meet for Relay Events at the Penn Relays last month, is in the May 13 issue of Sports Illustrated. Baker is featured in the magazine's 'Faces In The Crowd,' for her performance at the 119th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, where she helped rally the Cougars from a six-second deficit in the 4 x 800, according to SI. The Cougar's time was the third fastest in New Jersey history and the top high school finish in the nation this season. Baker also ran a 53.5 to anchor Columbia's fourth-place 4 x 400 team. District announces new hire at Monday's BOE meeting.
The South Orange - Maplewood School District announced Monday that Elizabeth Aaron will join Columbia High School as a new assistant principal beginning in the 2013-14 school year. She will replace Faye Lewis, who will become an assistant principal at Marshall School. At CHS, Aaron will join assistant principal Michael Healy. The district is currently searching for a third assistant principal for the high school, said Superintendent Brian Osborne at Monday's Board of Education meeting. Funds are for renovation of CHS auditorium.
The Achieve Foundation presented the South Orange - Maplewood Board of Education with a check Monday night for $150,000 to support the restoration of the Columbia High School auditorium. Achieve's President Ted Cole presented the funds to BOE President Beth Daugherty at the Board's regular monthly meeting. The donation is part of the Take a Seat (TAS) Campaign, a joint effort of Achieve and the South Orange - Maplewood School District (SOMSD) to restore the historic auditorium to its former splendor. The $1.3 million project will upgrade features of the 85-year old performance hall including its seats, sound system, lighting and flooring. The campaign hopes to raise a total of $350,000 to fill the gap between the $1 million the school …

South Orange and Maplewood photography students display work at the CHS gallery
CHS Photography students display their work in a gallery show entitled, "What You Don't See." Their work, which ranges from a Zelda Fitzgerald-style self portrait to feet clad in boots and ballet shoes, is in the Domeraki Gallery across from the main office in Columbia High School. "It is a very interesting exhibition of things you don't see," explains teacher Jon Fisher. "The students chose to represent things about themselves that are hidden, but important."

New state performance reports find CHS ranks "high" and "very high" in academics and college readiness, but lags in graduation rates and college performance.
In the recent school performance reports issued by the Christie administration, Columbia High School (CHS) ranked above average among peer schools in academics and very high in college and career readiness, but "significantly lags" in measures of graduation rates. In a separate ranking, CHS was seventh in a countywide ranking of SAT scores. The new reports, which are replacing the standard report cards, ranks the school on three different categories: academic achievement on Language Arts Literacy and Math sections of the New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA); college and career readiness which measures SAT, PSAT and participation in AP courses; and graduation and post-secondary graduation and drop out rates. CHS in Action Night, Wednesday, was an annual showcase for rising ninth graders and interested families to sample some of the home-grown talent in a myriad of areas. School screened "Iron Jawed Angels" for rapt crowds.
In honor of Women's History Month, the Women's History Professional Learning Community at Columbia High School hosted an an edited screening of the film "Iron Jawed Angels" on Thursday. During three periods, students got an introduction, saw a brief version of the film and closed with a post-film discussion. Iron Jawed Angels is a 2004 American film directed by Katja von Garnier and starring Hilary Swank, Frances O'Connor, Julia Ormond, and Anjelica Huston. It focuses on the American women's suffrage movement during the 1910s. The film received acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival.
