PHOTO: Groundbreaking on Springfield Avenue

Township officials join developers and Assemblyman McKeon to kick off construction of a mixed-use building across from Police & Courts Building and Walgreens.

  Mayor Vic DeLuca, Deputy Mayor Kathleen Leventhal and other township officials, as well as Assemblyman John F. McKeon, hoisted shovels Wednesday morning to ceremonially break ground on a mixed-use residential and commercial building at 1611 Springfield Ave. in Maplewood. The project, which has been in the works for several years, will feature 5,275 square feet of retail space on the ground floor as well as six apartments on the second floor. Daibes Gas 14 LLC, a subsidiary of Daibes Enterprises of Edgewater, will construct the building, to be located on a triangular plot of land across the street from the Police & Courts Building and from Walgreens on Burnett Avenue. The township has announced plans to break ground on a mixed-use residential and commercial building at 1611 Springfield Ave. in Maplewood on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 10 a.m.  The project, which has been in the works for several years, will feature 5,275 square feet of retail space on the ground floor as well as six apartments on the second floor. Redevelopment is Hot Topic at Township Committee Meeting

The Post Office site, projects on Burnett Avenue and Springfield Avenue were discussed.

The Maplewood Township Committee agreed this week to pay $20,000 to Columbia University’s Urban Design Lab to conduct a planning and design study for redevelopment of the Maplewood Post Office site.  The committee also passed a resolution authorizing a redevelopment agreement for the former Universal Chain site on Burnett Avenue.  The Tuesday meeting was more heavily attended than usual, because of the promotion to Sergeant of Maplewood Police Patrolman Niheema N. Gary.  Regarding the Urban Design Lab project, Mayor Vic DeLuca said that while the fee was “pricey,” it would help the township to think strategically about the overall plan for the site. “This is the most important piece of land we will develop,” he said.
