Dickens Village: Maplewood, in Miniature

Saturday marks official opening; Santa arrives and Christmas tree is lit

It might be hard to believe, but Dickens Village has been an annual holiday tradition in Maplewood for 51 years. Since 1961, countless awe-struck children and their equally enchanted parents have visited the quaint, miniature houses that artfully depict scenes from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. In their scale and beauty, and in the spirit of warmth and community they engender, the Maplewood Dickens Houses represent the small-town feel that continues to entice new generations of residents to call Maplewood home.  "Sometimes I think the Dickens Houses might be the real reason I moved here," said Michele Bessey, owner of Perch Home. Feels Like Spring, Looks Like Christmas in Maplewood

Village Christmas tree and Dickens houses get prepped for Saturday.

Mayor Vic DeLuca will perform the traditional Holiday Reading at 5 p.m., which will be followed by the tree lighting. The Dickens Village houses will be open for each Saturday (Dec. 8, Dec. 15, and Dec. 22) from 1 - 4 p.m. The houses will also be …

It Is a Far, Far Better Thing ... to Thank the Dickens Village Volunteers!

Mr. Dickens himself expresses gratitude to those who made his village possible this past holiday season.

My Dear Residents of Maplewood, It is on the strange convergence of a Leap Year and unnaturally warm winter weather that I’m permitted to share a few brief words with the people of Christmas future. This year, I’ve chosen the good people of Maplewood for all the work they’ve done over the years to preserve the true spirit of the holidays — Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza (such progress you’ve made!). I’m most pleased as well that Maplewood has chosen the Dickens Village as a recurring theme, a link to Christmases past, present and future. Alas, as I’ve told in many stories of my time, the holidays may be celebrated by many but it is the few who are committed to sharing the seasonal charms with others. So it is this year, before the 29th…
