First Sign of Spring: Annual Egg Hunts

Local hunts range from typical to non-traditional

While government officials debate whether the White House Easter Egg Roll will be cancelled in the event of a government shutdown, the show is still going on in your own community. On Saturday, the 29th annual Maplewood Spring Egg Hunt is open to children up to eight years old. Attendees should bring their own baskets for collecting eggs. Light refreshments will be served and there may even be a visit from a holiday Bunny. The hunt will take place at 1 p.m. at Memorial Park (across from Maplewood Town Hall). Rain date is Sunday at 1 p.m. The Livingston Lions Club will host an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Memorial Park. The event will feature 17 races for preschoolers through fifth graders, including races for …

In Their Easter Best

Photos: Along South Orange Avenue, displays of fashion and style. Upload your Easter photos from Maplewood and South Orange here.

Easter was back in fashion on Sunday as services were held at churches throughout South Orange and Maplewood on a glorious spring morning. On South Orange Avenue, girls in frilly dresses and boys in pint-size navy blazers searched for eggs under the sweeping pink branches of a weeping willow on the lawn of St. Andrew and Holy Communion. Inside the church, spring colors and a rich legacy for finery complemented traditional services highlighted by music and dance. Did you take pictures of your family and friends in their Easter finery? Post them here on Patch!

Easter’s Hope Shines From the Shadows of Darkness

Faithful attend St. Andrew and Holy Communion’s Easter Vigil on Saturday night.

With a bonfire burning as darkness fell Saturday night in South Orange, the Rev. Sandye Wilson, rector of St. Andrew and Holy Communion lit a white candle before entering a hushed and darkened church to begin the Easter vigil service. The liturgy ushered in Easter, joyously celebrated today by Christians around the world. This morning at St. Andrew and Holy Communion the church springs alive in color and spirit, with traditional services highlighted by music and dance. An orchestra with brass, wind, string and timpani will accompany a full choir (and children's choir). And the joyful grace of sacred dancers will add a  modern spin to the Easter celebration.  See a listing for all Easter services in South Orange Maplewood here. On Saturday …

Blessing of the Baskets at OLS on Saturday

OLS holds a Blessing of the Baskets and an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 7.

Holy Week, the days between Palm Sunday and Easter, is rich in tradition. From the red banners, which represent both blood and the fire of the Holy Spirit, to the spring flowers arriving in time for the first Easter Mass, Our Lady of Sorrows celebrates the holiday fully. Saturday, April 7, will see the Blessing of the Baskets service followed by an Easter Egg hunt on the rectory lawn. The Blessing of the Baskets is an Eastern European custom, possibly begun in Poland. Known as Swieconka, tradition holds that Easter foods are brought to church to be blessed on Holy Saturday, as at Our Lady of Sorrows. Parishioners learn that eggs represent new life, while salt is a sign of prosperity. Other traditional foods include ham or kielbasa, butter…
