This year's collaborative, community-wide art project features a new spin on last year's hoops.
Remember last year's hoops that sprang up all around Maplewood in preparation for the town's July 4 festivities? This year, the hoops have morphed into squares. It's all part of Maplewood's Annual Fourth of July large-scale, public art project. Sponsored by 1978 Maplewood Arts Center and Post 10120 VFW Maplewood, the project is the brainchild of local artist Benjamin John Kaufman. Last year, the circles mounted on poles were filled by local residents with decorated canvas, fabric or crochet. (Check out the 2009 project and the 2011 project). Show features three New Jersey artists; opening reception is Saturday.
Gallery 1978 will host A Different Perspective, Abstract Painting, opening Saturday, March 3. The show will feature three of New Jersey's most notable abstractionists, Larry McKim, Peter S. Arakawa and Vivian McDuffie. Curated by Onnie Strother, the show kicks off with an opening reception on Saturday from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., and closes with a closing reception on April 28. The gallery will be open weekends from 2 -5 p.m. (except Sunday, March 31). According to the gallery's website, McKim, Arakawa and Mc Duffie are represented in major public and private collections, such as the Newark Museum, the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton and the James E. The work of Emma Amos is highlighted; exhibit begins Feb. 2

Gallery 1978 on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood kicks off its 11th Annual Black History Month Exhibit on Saturday, Feb. 2, featuring the work of acclaimed artist Emma Amos. The exhibit runs through March 24; an opening reception will be held Sunday, Feb. 10 from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Amos is an internationally renowned artist whose work is included in the collections of MOMA, NJ State Museum and the Newark Museum. Her art combines printmaking and textiles. Some of her paintings are bordered with African fabrics and her own quilting or weavings and have been seen as a connecting link to European tapestries and the African diaspora. On Monday, the Maplewood Farmer’s Market is open from 2-7 p.m. on Springfield Avenue at Indiana Street. In addition to the fresh produce -- much of which is at its peak now -- make sure to sample some Lickt Gelato, made by a Maplewood local. For teens and tweens, the Maplewood Memorial Library Hilton Branch will host an Afterhours Party featuring local band 8Bit on Wed., July 25 from 7-9 p.m. Enjoy the original songs and covers of this alternative rock band comprised of Columbia High School students. Advance Placement Studio Art students from Columbia High School, Arts High School in Newark and Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights show off their work.
From now through January 8, 2012, local art lovers can see what students in three local high schools are up to in their Advanced Placement in Studio Art classes in FRESH 4.0 at 1978 Maplewood Arts Center. Over 50 works of art created by students from Columbia High School in Maplewood/South Orange, Arts High School in Newark and Governor Livingston High School in Berekley Heights grace the walls of the gallery in Maplewood. In its fourth year, the annual show, curated this season by 1978 board member Onnie Strother, serves an important purpose. "The kids get to see what the other AP's are doing," says Strother.
