Girl (Scouts) Can Do These Jobs, Too

Maplewood scouting troop hosts mini career expo to introduce girls to different professions.

Girl Scout Troop 20718 of Maplewood will host "Girls Can Do These Jobs Too!," an educational leadership workshop and fundraiser at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) on Saturday, April 20 from 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. The program seeks to encourage girls of all ages -- from elementary school through high school -- to learn what it takes to be successful in any job, including those in typically male-dominated professions. The event marks the completion of the Troop’s Leadership journey on women, stereotypes, and teaching girls to reach out and speak up.  "In leading the girls, we found that the jobs that came to mind for them were teacher, nurse, doctor, lawyer, finance or professor," said Troop Leader Sherina Larrier. "These were …

Girl Scouts Clean Up South Mountain Reservation

Troop from Seth Boyden School tackles trash in the reservation.

Junior GS Troop 20648 from Seth Boyden Demonstration School, led by Tracey Woods - Trash Tackler Coordinator for the South Mountain Conservancy- spent Saturday morning spring cleaning at the South Mountain reservation.  They worked for an hour and a half clearing garbage and debris from the entry drive off of South Orange Avenue.  In that time the girls collected about four cubic yards of trash.  The troop was amazed at the amount of garbage they were able to collect in such a short period of time.  Bottles, cans, plastic bags, wheels, boots and even a stereo system were removed from the side of the road.  Maura Donnelly remarked, "I can't believe people just throw this stuff out of their car windows". "Why don't people just throw their …

SOMW Girl Scouts to Hold Yard Sale

The troop expects a huge turnout of goods and shoppers this weekend

Girl Scout troop 20489 will be holding a yard sale Saturday and Sunday, July 7 - 8, from 9 a.m. until noon each day at 12 Crowell Place in Maplewood to raise money for an upcoming trip. The 16 scouts, made up of girls from Maplewood and South Orange Middle Schools, have gathered items from their families and neighbors and will be selling them in what is sure to be a huge sale. According to Maggie Tuohy, a parent of one of the girls in the troop, they will have golf clubs, children’s toys, books, clothing, small items of furniture, household goods and more – they will even be selling cookies and lemonade. The sale will raise money for the troop’s September trip to Rocking Horse Ranch, in Highland, NY. They are looking forward to the …

Friends of Eagle Island File Suit Against Girl Scouts Heart of NJ

The group, formed to preserve Eagle Island as a camp, says that the planned sale of Eagle Island violates donors’ intent.

Friends of Eagle Island announced today that it has filed suit against Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey in the New York State Court, Franklin County. Friends is a not-for-profit group that was formed in 2011 with the goal "to save, protect, and perpetuate the intended use of Eagle Island." Eagle Island is a National Historic Landmark Great Camp on Upper Saranac Lake that was a summer home to generations of Girl Scouts from Essex and Union counties in New Jersey — and in some towns beyond. The camp was designed by noted Adirondack architect William L. Coulter.  Henry Graves, Jr., a New Jersey industrialist, and his wife Florence, donated Eagle Island to the Girl Scouts of the Oranges, N.J., in 1937 in memory of their two sons, with the …

It is disheartening that this action is necessary, but the traditioinal Girl Scout values which include respect for the environment, responsible stewardship of beautiful natural places, and providing girls the opportunity to learn, grow, and participate in a wonderful supportive community appear to be insignificant to the current Girl Scout executives who inherited this property, but have no idea…   more ›

Reader Question Answered, Mystery (Mostly) Solved

A Patch reader wondered about a photo his mother kept; you answered!

Patch asked and you answered -- and how! Earlier this month, a reader sent in the following query along with the photo: My mom (and her sisters and mother) were very active in Girl Scouts in the Oranges in the 1920s. Mom's maiden name was Irene Tonks. Mom and her sister - Betty Tonks - were Golden Eaglets," writes a reader. "I now own a very good quality 8 x 10 photograph of a US flag being formally raised on a flag pole. The following is written on the back of the photo: 'October 26, 1923. First flag raising at Camp Natalie Kip.' Can you tell me more about this setting and event? Thanks! He also notes that, "There is also something else on the back of the photo:  a large, black ink rubber stamp 'impression' that reads 'From Drew, Bynum, …

Girl Scouts at the Oval, c 1923: A Reader Seeks History Help

A reader writes in with a photo and a query

Any local historians have an idea? Or do you know Girl Scout history inside and out? This photo raises questions that we'd love to answer! Please note the partially obscured sign that reads "Girl Scouts [of] the Oranges."  On the back of the photo the following is also …

Local Brownies Support Transgender Girl Scout

Learning that Girls Scouts is about caring for people and including people.

Maplewood mom Laura Booker was skeptical when her daughter wanted to join the Girl Scouts organization: As a kid, being a girl scout was the last thing I had ever wanted mostly because I couldn’t fathom wearing the dress, and as an adult, I want to raise a kid who is progressive and feminist and not stuck in the 1950s (which was the assumption I made about the Girl Scouts). But Booker found that the Girl Scouts were a broader-thinking organization than she had anticipated: I couldn’t have foreseen that joining the Brownies would be such a rich opportunity for Emma and a couple of her friends from the troop to show support for a transgender girl named Bobby Montoya who is a Girl Scout in Colorado. This was a story that Emma could relate …

A Clean Green River Runs Through It

Volunteers clean up the east branch of the Rahway River for a belated Earth Day celebration.

Maplewood is clean and green and so is the east branch of the Rahway River that runs through Memorial Park, thanks to the Environmental Advisor Committee and about 40 volunteers — most of them children — who came out on a glorious day to pick up trash in the river. “We're doing this to keep the Rahway River clean,” said Sheila Baker Gujral, a member of the Environmental Advisor Committee. “We didn't do all of the Earth Day activities (two weeks ago) because of the school break. So we're doing this one now.” The Rahway, which runs through South Orange, Maplewood and Millburn, will become part of a bikeway/walkway between the three towns, according to Baker Gujral. Kids of all ages came out to pick up trash in and along the banks of the …
