In a report, Bart Albini and Bob Perez take the town to task for poor maintenance of town property.
Bart Albini and Bob Perez are taking Maplewood officials to task for the state of public buildings. In a report presented to Maplewood’s Township Committee on Tuesday, Albini and Perez—both Republican candidates for Township Committee—presented a large number of photos of Township buildings that are decaying or in disrepair. The report spotlights the conditions of the Townships two firehouses and libraries, the Civic Center in Memorial Park and the Community Center at De Hart Park. “It is clear to see that the inspections and maintenance of these building has either been a very low priority or no priority at all,” the report reads. Full report is below. Photographic Report on The Current Condition of Our Public Buildings Presented by Bart …

Republicans protest DeHart Park funding and more
In a statement released over the weekend, Maplewood’s Republican club called for the repeal of the Open Space Trust, saying the fund is not being used for its intended purpose, but instead as additional funding for the recreation department. Also, they are accusing the Township Committee of using the money in the fund to pay for projects voters oppose, particularly the DeHart Park rehabilitations. The release calls for “a referendum to repeal The Municipal Open Space Trust Fund” and asks the Township Committee “to reconsider its decision to go ahead with renovations of DeHart Park which were rejected last November by voters in a non-binding resolution.” The referendum, the GOP say in the release, was passed by Maplewood voters as an anti-…

Republicans question the Township Committee’s actions on the Dunnell Road space.
As we predicted, a number of people in the township are unhappy with the decision on the old police station. The Township Committee expressed their preference for high end housing to go into the space. Among the loudest critics of the proposal are the Township Republicans, who believe that promising ideas that arose early in the project’s development have been unfairly passed over. In 2006, the Township put together an Ad Hoc Advisory Committee to consider the future of the property. Some in the GOP say the report’s findings were given short shrift. “There were some good ideas there, and we’re trying to revive some of those ideas,” Veronica Peralta, a leading Township Republican and member of the Citizen’s Budget Advisory Committee, said…

"One of the responsibilities of the Township Committee, as duly elected officials, is to maintain public buildings that have been built with tax payers’ money." Does anyone even care? Where is the outrage over the lack of attention to simple maintance issues that are allowed to grow into hundreds of thousands of dollars in replacement costs?   more ›
