As chairman of the state Assembly's Environment and Solid Waste Commission, John McKeon has been involved in discussions to potentially draft legislation that would ban large retailers from using plastic bags. However, since it's been shown that the carbon footprint of paper bags exceeds that of plastic bags, he's been considering another way: getting grocery stores to encourage the use of reusable bags. "We're trying to work with the various businesses to see if we can bring about voluntary compliance," said McKeon, who represents Maplewood in the state legislature.
