McKeon Distributes Reusable Bags at Eden Gourmet

Assemblyman John McKeon toured grocery stores in the 27th District on Tuesday, ending in South Orange.

As chairman of the state Assembly's Environment and Solid Waste Commission, John McKeon has been involved in discussions to potentially draft legislation that would ban large retailers from using plastic bags. However, since it's been shown that the carbon footprint of paper bags exceeds that of plastic bags, he's been considering another way: getting grocery stores to encourage the use of reusable bags. "We're trying to work with the various businesses to see if we can bring about voluntary compliance," said McKeon, who represents Maplewood in the state legislature. Whole Foods Healthcare Fallout?

Local reactions to the national controversy stirred by Whole Foods CEO's Wall Street Journal health care op-ed are mixed.

Many progressive Whole Foods shoppers were shocked when CEO John Mackey wrote an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal that questioned the need for government-run health care. In the piece, headlined "The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare," Mackey said health care is not a constitutionally guaranteed right, and argued that health is largely a matter of individual responsibility. The piece caused a stir among healthcare advocates. Shoppers in Austin, Texas, and Berkeley, California, have picketed Whole Foods stores.  A “Boycott Whole Foods” Facebook group has almost 28,000 members. Locally, the reaction has been mixed.
