Seller of Historic House Defends Realtor

Woman who lived in historic Valley Street home for more than 40 years "thrilled" by work done by Robert Northfield.

The seller of the historic Dare House on Valley Street defended the developer who tore it down last week, saying the 1800s home was not salvageable.  "There are times when things have to go," said Blossom "Bobbie" Cushing, who had lived in the house since 1969, first with her husband and then alone after he died. "Realistically, I couldn't live there and no one else wanted to." Cushing's house was listed by real estate agent Robert Northfield, who faced a storm of criticism after he sold the house to his brother, who knocked down the historic home. Historic Preservation Comm. "Saddened" by Dare House Demo

Maplewood Commission says 1800s house was "part of the historic fabric of the town."

Like others in the community, the Maplewood Historic Preservation Commission (MHPC) was saddened by the demolition of the Dare House on Valley Street. Although the house was not a designated Maplewood Historic Landmark, the Dare House was part of the historic fabric of the town, and its loss was jarring to us all. One of the reasons many of us moved to Maplewood was because of its distinct appearance as an intact railroad suburb, with many fine examples of 18th, 19th and early 20th century buildings. Maplewood does have a Historic Preservation Ordinance and a Historic Preservation Commission.  Currently, there are eleven individually designated landmarks in Maplewood that come under the authority of the historic preservation ordinance. This former CHS Librarian/Archivist is very sad to notice that it has been 'destroyed.' The history of Maplewood needs top be kept. Afterall, the CHS and its floor plan was listed 'as ideal' in the 1927 Encyclopedia Britannica (on display in the Library's Archives Room). Things like this need to be kept for the folks of tom'w.
